Next-Gen Nissan Terrano: The Rugged Ladder-Frame PHEV Set to Challenge the Giants

The Indian SUV landscape is undergoing a massive transformation. With the growing demand for highly robust, go-anywhere vehicles loaded with premium features and green powertrains, automakers are returning to the drawing board. One of the most iconic nameplates in recent automotive history, the Nissan Terrano, is gearing up for a comeback.

Recently showcased as a concept at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, The new-generation Nissan Terrano is poised to transform from a badge-engineered compact crossover into a full-size, ladder-frame SUV designed to take on segment heavyweights like the Toyota Fortuner.

A Bold Shift in Design and Capability

Unlike the older iteration of the Terrano, which was closely based on the Renault Duster, the next-gen Terrano takes heavy design and structural inspiration from the Nissan Frontier and Dongfeng Z9 platform. This translates into an authentic, rugged appeal with a bold road presence.

The concept model previews striking new elements:

  • Exterior Styling: The SUV features a flat, upright front fascia illuminated by a signature LED light bar and the glowing ‘Nissan’ lettering.
  • Proportions: Characterized by a clamshell bonnet, squared-off wheel arches, and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel, it retains traditional off-road dimensions.
  • Utility: Complete with a factory-fitted roof rack and integrated ladder, it is built for outdoor and cross-country adventures.

Did You Know? The Nissan Terrano will introduce Nissan’s first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain in a ladder-frame SUV configuration, bridging the gap between internal combustion range and zero-emission city driving.

Power, Performance, and Hybrid Technology

At the heart of the next-gen Terrano is a modern plug-in hybrid system mated to a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine. This setup is paired with dual electric motors and a high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack.

  • Electric and Hybrid Range: The Terrano PHEV is expected to deliver a pure electric range of up to 100 km, while the combined hybrid range can exceed 1,300 km on a single tank.
  • Bidirectional Charging: The SUV is expected to support Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) power functions, allowing you to run appliances or charge other vehicles using up to 6 kW of peak output.

Trims and Market Positioning

Nissan plans to manufacture the production version of the SUV globally, and the Indian subsidiary is evaluating localization options to ensure a highly competitive price tag. The Terrano will be positioned to compete against premium models like the Toyota Fortuner, Skoda Kodiaq, and the MG Gloster, bridging the gap between rugged utility and high-end tech.

Interior and Tech Advancements

The cabin distances itself from utilitarian workhorse roots and brings luxury to the fore:

  • Pillar-to-Pillar Display: The dashboard is dominated by a sweeping, multi-screen setup that manages both instrument displays and infotainment.
  • Advanced Safety: The SUV is expected to come with a 360-degree camera, advanced traction control modes, and an ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) suite.

The Road Ahead

The Production-ready version of the Terrano PHEV is expected to debut globally in early 2027, with an Indian market launch targeted for 2028 via local assembly at the Renault-Nissan plant in Chennai.

By utilizing cost-effective, quick development strategies from Nissan’s Dongfeng Joint Venture, the brand is ready to offer a value-packed, rugged SUV to the Indian market.
