The Legend Reborn: Introducing the All-New Freelander 8

For many automotive enthusiasts, the name Freelander evokes a specific kind of nostalgia—the rugged, compact charm of the late 90s that helped define the modern SUV. But as we step into 2026, the Freelander is no longer just a model in a rearview mirror. It has been reborn as a standalone, premium electrified brand, and its flagship, the Freelander 8, is officially here to shake up the global market.

Unveiled just days ago at the Auto China 2026 expo in Beijing, the Freelander 8 represents a historic “marriage of superpowers” between Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Chery. While JLR provides the iconic design DNA and British prestige, Chery brings the lightning-fast tech innovation and supply chain mastery.

Design: A “Castle-Style” Masterpiece

The Freelander 8 doesn’t just mimic the past; it honors it. The design team, led by JLR’s signature aesthetic principles, has created what they call a “castle-style body.” It is upright, imposing, and inherently sturdy.

Key design highlights include:

  • The Dual-Peak Hood: A direct nod to the original 1997 model that fans will instantly recognize.
  • The Signature D-Pillar: The distinctive triangular rear window—a hallmark of the classic 3-door Freelander—makes a stylish comeback, blending heritage with a sleek, aerodynamic silhouette.
  • Interlocking LED Lighting: Modern, high-definition lighting that retains the “interlocking” signature of the Land Rover lineage while embracing a futuristic, minimalist glow.

Standing at over 5.1 meters long with a wheelbase exceeding 3 meters, this is a full-sized SUV designed for the modern family.

Tech-Forward: The Heart of the Machine

Underneath its British-inspired exterior lies a powerhouse of Chinese engineering. Built on the Chery E0X high-end EV platform, the Freelander 8 offers a versatile range of “New Energy” powertrains:

  • BEV (Battery Electric): An 800V architecture enabling ultra-fast charging.
  • EREV (Extended Range): Utilizing a small petrol engine solely as a generator to provide a total range that can exceed 1,000 km.
  • PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid): For those who want the best of both worlds.

Performance is equally impressive. The tri-motor variant is expected to push out nearly 550 horsepower, capable of launching this luxury giant from 0–100 km/h in under 5 seconds.

The World’s First i-ATS

One of the most talked-about features is the intelligent All-Terrain System (i-ATS). This isn’t just a basic AWD setup. Developed using advanced virtual center locks and a rear electronic limited-slip differential (e-LSD), the i-ATS offers nine distinct terrain modes. Whether you’re navigating urban rain or untamed wilderness, the Freelander 8 adapts its dual-chamber air suspension and torque delivery in real-time.

Interior: The “Surround View Gallery”

Stepping inside the Freelander 8 feels less like entering a car and more like walking into a high-end lounge. The cabin features a 2-2-2 six-seater layout, emphasizing individual comfort.

  • Zero-Gravity Seating: The second row features “Eames Lounge Chair” inspired seats that can recline into a zero-gravity position for ultimate relaxation.
  • Surround View Gallery: A massive, pillar-to-pillar panoramic display dominates the dashboard, powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295P chip. It’s smooth, intuitive, and supports L2+ autonomous driving features.
  • Premium Audio: In partnership with Harman Kardon, the Freelander 8 delivers a concert-hall experience, complete with active noise cancellation to keep the cabin whisper-quiet.

Safety and Sustainability

Safety was a non-negotiable pillar during development. The brand has confirmed that the Freelander 8 has already cleared five major global NCAP crash tests—including ASEAN NCAP and Euro NCAP—achieving five-star ratings across the board.

The batteries, supplied by CATL, utilize a 6C-capable Freevoy pack. This means you can add roughly 400 km of range in just 9 minutes of charging, effectively ending the era of “range anxiety.”

A Global Vision

The Freelander 8 is just the beginning. The brand plans to launch six new models over the next five years, targeting 90 countries worldwide. With production beginning at the upgraded Changshu plant in late 2026, we are looking at a vehicle that successfully bridges the gap between legendary British off-road heritage and the cutting-edge future of Chinese electrification.

The Freelander is no longer the “entry-level” SUV of the past. It is a premium, high-tech sanctuary that proves some legends are better the second time around.
